Oberföhring is one of the oldest documented settlements in Munich. As early as around 750 AD the place was first mentioned in a document as "ad feringas" — centuries before Munich itself was founded. The name derives from a ferry across the Isar that crossed the river here and formed the heart of the settlement.

Today Oberföhring is a quiet, green neighborhood in the northeast of Munich. Wide, tree-lined streets, established single-family-home areas and a strong sense of community shape the picture. Many families appreciate the peaceful residential setting that nevertheless has excellent connections to the city center. The recreational area around Feringasee — a popular bathing lake right at the gates of the neighborhood — offers relaxation year-round.

Oberföhring is part of city district 13 Bogenhausen and has around 13,000 residents. Despite belonging to the larger district, Oberföhring has preserved its own, almost village-like character. Oberföhringer Straße forms the main axis of the neighborhood — small shops, cafés and medical practices line up here.
