Frequently Asked Questions

What is supplementary dental insurance?

Supplementary dental insurance complements the benefits of statutory health insurance (GKV) for dental treatments and prosthetics. It covers costs that are not or only partially covered by the GKV.

When is supplementary dental insurance worthwhile?

Supplementary dental insurance is especially worthwhile if you want high-quality dental prosthetics (e.g., implants, ceramic crowns) or wish to use regular professional dental cleaning. The earlier you sign up, the lower the premiums.

What does the waiting period mean?

The waiting period is the time after signing the contract during which no insurance coverage is provided. For most plans, it is 8 months for dental prosthetics. Some premium plans offer no waiting period.

What are annual benefit limits?

In the first years, many insurers limit the maximum reimbursement per year (dental scale). Typical amounts are e.g., EUR 1,000 in the first year, increasing to full coverage from the 4th or 5th year.

Are implants covered by supplementary dental insurance?

Yes, many plans cover 80-100% of implant costs including bone grafting. Note the annual benefit limits, as implants often cost several thousand euros.

What does the Finanztest rating mean?

Stiftung Warentest / Finanztest regularly rates supplementary dental insurance. Grades range from 0.5 (very good) to 5.0 (poor). We show the most recent available rating.

Can I still get insurance with existing dental problems?

Yes, but already missing teeth or ongoing treatments are usually excluded from coverage. Health questions on the application must be answered truthfully.

How is the fixed subsidy calculated?

The fixed subsidy is the amount that statutory health insurance contributes towards dental prosthetics. It is based on the diagnosis and can be increased by up to 75% through regular dental visits (bonus booklet).
