What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation of the periodontium — the structures that anchor the tooth in the jawbone. Left untreated, it leads to gum recession, loss of jawbone, and ultimately tooth loss. According to the WHO, more than 11 million people in Germany are affected by a moderate to severe form — often without noticing.

Gingivitis or periodontitis?

  • Gingivitis: reversible inflammation of the gums. Red, swollen, bleeding gums. Curable with thorough oral hygiene and a professional dental cleaning.
  • Periodontitis: the inflammation has reached the bone. The bone loss can no longer be reversed — but progression can be halted.

How do I recognize periodontitis?

Classic warning signs: bleeding gums when brushing, persistently red or swollen gums, bad breath, exposed tooth necks, pus from gum pockets, loose teeth. Periodontitis often remains painless for years — damage becomes visible only late.

Why is treatment so important?

Periodontitis is not just an oral health issue. Studies show clear links to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, premature births, and Alzheimer's. Treating periodontitis does more than just save teeth.

How does treatment proceed?

In Germany, statutory insurers follow the 2021 PAR guideline: structured diagnostics, a hygiene phase with professional cleaning, closed subgingival cleaning (anti-infective), and years of accompanying supportive periodontal therapy (SPT). In 70–80 % of patients, the condition can be stabilized this way.

Is periodontitis curable?
Periodontitis is not curable in the traditional sense, but it can be well controlled through systematic treatment and regular UPT aftercare. The goal is to stop bone loss and preserve the teeth.
Does health insurance pay for periodontitis treatment?
Yes — since the 2021 PAR reform, systematic periodontitis treatment is covered by public health insurance. The prerequisite is a positive diagnosis (PSI ≥ 3). We will submit the application for you.
How often is UPT needed after periodontal treatment?
Depending on the risk profile, every 3–6 months. UPT (Supportive Periodontal Therapy) is crucial to prevent the disease from progressing again. Pausing treatment often leads to a relapse.
What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Gingivitis is gum inflammation without bone loss — it is reversible with better oral hygiene. Periodontitis already involves the loss of jawbone and requires systematic treatment.
What happens without periodontitis treatment?
Left untreated, periodontitis leads to progressive bone loss, tooth mobility, and eventually tooth loss. Systemic consequences (cardiovascular diseases, diabetes) are also scientifically proven.
