What does dental anxiety treatment mean?

Estimates suggest that around 10 million people in Germany suffer from dental anxiety so severe that they postpone necessary treatments for years. In our practice, we take this anxiety seriously as a real burden — and we have adapted our clinical routine to address it.

Dentophobia or ordinary nervousness?

A certain amount of unease before a dental visit is completely normal. We speak of dentophobia when the fear is so intense that patients avoid appointments even when they are in pain or know their dental health is deteriorating. Typical accompanying symptoms: panic attacks, nausea, racing heart at the mere thought of an appointment.

How does a first visit with us work?

No treatment at the first appointment. We sit down together, listen, and take a look inside the mouth — without pressure. Together we decide how far you want to go today. Many of our anxious patients return for the second appointment noticeably more relaxed.

What sedation options are available?

  • Nitrous oxide (N₂O): Relaxing and anxiety-relieving; you remain conscious. Fully eliminated within minutes — you can drive yourself home.
  • Twilight sedation (IV sedation): Supervised by an anesthesiologist; you doze lightly and usually do not remember the treatment.
  • General anesthesia: For severe cases or extensive procedures — in cooperation with an anesthesiologist, under clinical conditions.

Cognitive-behavioral strategies

For many patients, gradual desensitization — regular, short, low-pain appointments with clear communication — is more effective than sedation. We adapt the pathway to you, not the other way around.

Finally back at the dentist after 15 years of avoidance. The team took so much time — I am endlessly grateful.

Twilight sedation was the solution for me. The preliminary practice tour and open conversation gave me a lot of reassurance.

Häufige Fragen zur Behandlung von Angstpatienten in Bogenhausen

Was tun gegen Zahnarztangst?
What happens during the first visit if I have dental anxiety?
We start with a preliminary phone consultation. After that, a practice tour without any treatment is possible — you get to know our rooms and the team. Only when you feel comfortable will we schedule the initial consultation.
What is the difference between twilight sedation and general anesthesia?
In twilight sedation (analgosedation), you are deeply relaxed and usually don't remember the treatment — but you remain responsive. With general anesthesia, you are completely asleep under the supervision of a specialist anesthesiologist. Both are possible on our dedicated anesthesia days.
Does health insurance cover the sedation?
No — nitrous oxide, twilight sedation, and general anesthesia are out-of-pocket expenses. In medically indicated individual cases (e.g., severe dental phobia with a medical certificate), insurance may cover part of the cost. We will advise you individually.
Can I just tour the practice initially?
Yes — this is expressly encouraged. Many of our anxious patients come in first just for a practice tour, without any treatment. This is the norm for us, not the exception.
How many anxious patients do you treat per month?
In our practice, we continuously treat anxious patients of all severity levels — from mild discomfort to severe dental phobia with years of treatment avoidance. We have the experience and routine.
